Yoga Classes
Classes and Descriptions

Please note that all classes offered at BBCC are open to the public.

Beginners and Gentle Yoga
This class will introduce participants to all aspects of Yoga including breathing and meditation. Instruction focus will be on the correct execution of asanas (postures) and building a strong foundation for future yoga practice. Gentle modifications and individualized attention to participants will be provided to meet the unique needs of those just beginning the journey and support the development of those who wish to expand their personal practice beyond books and videos. Class size is limited.

Mixed Level Yoga
Stretch, strengthen and tone in this traditional hatha yoga class, suitable for several levels of fitness. Classic yoga postures like Downward facing dog, Warrior, Triangle, and Cobra, are taught with modifications -- so you can challenge yourself with advanced variations, or pamper yourself with more gentle options. This class will offer the opportunity to advance your practice, if that feels right for you.

Vinyasa Flow Yoga
This fast paced class introduces the flowing form of yoga called Vinyasa. Vinyasa, which means breath-synchronized movement, is a yoga style based on the performance of a series of poses in which movement is matched to the breath. These classes typically start with a number of Sun Salutations to warm up the body for more intense stretching, inversions, or backbends done later in the class. Progressions to postures introduced as the 8 week series progresses to advance the student.*
Restorative Yoga
A gentle practice that passively opens the body to help de-stress as well as to encourage deep relaxation. Restorative yoga can soothe the nervous system, aid in digestion, calm the mind, and promote total body health. The Sunday evening practice is a perfect way to close the weekend and embrace Monday with a happy heart. Accessible to everyone.

Prenatal Yoga
Prenatal yoga addresses the physical and emotional changes one experiences throughout a pregnancy. Yoga can help alleviate some physical challenges common during pregnancy, such as backache, poor circulation, restless sleep, and struggles with balance. Yoga has also been used to keep the body in shape throughout the pregnancy and to tone and create flexibility in the parts of the body used during the birthing process. The emphasis on different breathing techniques calms the nerves and relieves stress, and may be useful during labor. Yogic meditation builds focus while melting away anxieties. A prenatal yoga class is a great way to meet other pregnant women, forge a community, and stay positive and motivated. While this class is appropriate for all levels, please consult with your medical practitioner about what is appropriate for your pregnancy.

Mixed Level Power Yoga

A challenging but accessible mixed level class designed to build strength and flexibility. Best suited for participants who are familiar with some basic asanas and enjoy trying new postures. Classes will include some vinyasa sequences as well as slower, individual postures, breathwork, and quiet meditation. The instructor emphasizes proper alignment, modifications for individual needs, and pure enjoyment of yoga practice.

Mixed Level Yoga
Mixed level yoga is exactly how it sounds. This class is for the student just beginning their practice as well as the advanced student looking to enhance and deepen their practice.

Yoga for Chronic Back Pain
This program emphasizes the use of postures and breathing for managing low back symptoms, and the focuses of the different classes range from: relaxation, strength building, flexibility, large-muscle movements, asymmetric poses, strengthening hip muscles, lateral bending; integration; and customizing a personal practice. The postures have been selected from a core of 17 relatively simple postures, and some adaptations. The aim was to select those postures with most benefit and least risk to the back, so that everyone, from beginner to advanced can participate safely. Each class includes a question-and-answer period, an initial and final breath exercise, 5 to 12 postures, and a guided deep relaxation. Often, postures are not held, but repeated several times to gently build strength and flexibility, along with healthy neuromuscular patterns. Designed with the beginner in mind, even experienced yoga practitioners can benefit from the posture sequences in this course.

The program is 2 five week series, beginning Wednesday evenings from February 18-March 18 at 5:45pm. Classes take place at Balanced Body Wellness Center, 175 Church St. The first session lays the foundation of the program, Back Care Basics. In March, the second series will begin: Back to Health. Students may sign up for a single series, or both. Each student will receive a complimentary individual intake, so they can have their questions answered and make sure the program is appropriate for their needs. Private, personalized sessions are also available.

Kathy has completed extensive studies with Gary Kraftsow, author of Yoga for Wellness, and creator of the Viniyoga program used in the NIH program. Researchers chose to use Viniyoga, because it is a therapeutically oriented form of yoga that emphasizes safety and is relatively easy to learn. Ms. Jones is the only certified Viniyoga instructor who teaches in Northwest CT, and she is one of the few teachers in the country permitted access to the back pain program in its entirety.

Pilates
Pilates is a method of exercise that focuses on strengthening the core or "power house", which includes muscles of the abdomen, low back, hips and buttocks. It incorporates a philosophy that emphasizes training the mind and body to work together towards the goal of overall health. This total body workout is designed to strengthen and tone muscles, increase flexibility and stamina, and improve posture, balance and coordination. Feel fit and revitalized instead of sore and fatigued. Develop and heighten your mind-body awareness. Most exercises can be adapted to accomodate various fitness levels and medical issues. Changes will happen quickly with regular attendance and practice.
